Quick comparison
| Grade | Texture | Usual use | Rough coverage per tonne |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screened topsoil | Crumbly, with stones and roots screened out | Levelling, filling, under lawns | About 7m² at 100mm |
| Blended topsoil | Richer, with added organic matter | Beds, borders, planters | About 2.5m² at 300mm |
| Top dressing | Fine-screened | Spread thinly over grass | Depends on your rate, often a few millimetres |
| Turf underlay | Fine and free-draining | Last layer before turf | About 7m² at 100mm |
Coverage figures are rough guides using typical densities. Soil weighs more when wet, so allow a little extra.
A natural material
Topsoil comes from natural sources, so colour and texture vary a little from one load to the next. If your project has a written specification or needs test information, mention it in the notes on your quote request; we’ll let you know what we can provide for the soil we have at the time.
